Woodworking Heritage
At the Monastery of Vilela, one of the municipality’s most significant historic buildings, Paredes has opened its first municipal museum. The Museum of Furniture of Paredes celebrates one of the industries that has played a major role in shaping the identity and economy of the region.
The museum traces the history of furniture-making in Paredes, from traditional craftsmanship to modern production, following the journey from the selection and processing of timber through to the finished piece.
EDIGMA developed the museum’s exhibition design. The project began with historical research and content development, followed by the definition of the exhibition concept and narrative journey. This was then translated into the exhibition architecture, graphic design and a range of technology-based solutions, through to the installation and integration of the museum systems.
Throughout the museum, visitors will find tools, furniture and iconic designer chairs from the permanent collection, alongside digital testimonies from local companies and business owners, bringing to life an industry whose story is still being written.
The display cases were designed to protect the pieces while keeping them accessible to visitors. The project also incorporates physical, sensory and cognitive accessibility solutions, together with more sustainable choices in materials, lighting and energy consumption.
Wood itself becomes an interface. Wooden discs fitted with touch sensors allow visitors to interact with a projected artwork that responds to their movements. Elsewhere along the route, other circular wooden elements combine interactive technology with sound. At an old carpenter’s workbench, a custom-built interactive game using sensors and bespoke software invites families and children to explore, in a simple and hands-on way, how woodworking techniques and design have evolved over time.
This space brings together memory, knowledge and technology in a space dedicated to an industry that is deeply rooted in the history of the region. A place where the craftsmanship and know-how of Paredes can be discovered and experienced by new generations.
