The Municipal Library of Coimbra Centenary

The centenary celebrations of the Municipal Library of Coimbra (MLC) began on December 1 and last until the end of 2023. The inauguration of MLC took place on December 24, 1922, it is precisely this whole historical and cultural journey – a century of public reading – that is represented in the documentary and informative exhibition entitled “Toma e Lê”. Available until March 25, 2023, the exhibition marks the start of the centenary celebrations, in two distinct spaces of the city: Sala da Cidade and Casa Municipal da Cultura.

EDIGMA was the chosen company by the Coimbra City Hall for the design, production and installation of the exhibition that aims to honor a century of reading through a revisit of the press of Coimbra, celebrating the life and work of a “house of reading”, whose centenary history can not dissociate itself from the contemporary process of secularization of reading and democratization of knowledge.

The exhibition is distributed in two exhibition centers, which present an itinerary of reading the history of the Municipal Library of Coimbra divided into two periods: “From idea to 1993”, patent in the City Hall, and “From 1993 to the Present”, exhibited at Galeria Pinho Dinis (Municipal House of Culture).

In addition to the exhibition that inaugurates a diverse and comprehensive set of cultural initiatives related to the ephemeris, which take place from December 1, 2022 to December 16, 2023, the relevant role that the Municipal Library of Coimbra has provided to the community, will be enhanced through the implementation of a multifaceted, comprehensive commemorative program, innovative and ambitious that will unfold in different public and cultural spaces of the city.
