Learning through co-creation
The University of Beira Interior (UBI) has opened the EPIC Room, a space for active learning, experimentation, knowledge sharing, and co-creation. Located in the UBI Learning HUB building, next to Polo I in Covilhã, the room is open to both teaching staff and students.
The EPIC Room was created under the EPIC Consortium (Pedagogical Excellence and Innovation through Co-creation), which brings together UBI and six other Portuguese higher education institutions and is co-funded by Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). The space builds on the work of the university’s Office for Pedagogical Innovation and was designed for teaching practices that need more than a lecture hall and a projector.
EDIGMA was responsible for the turnkey development and implementation of the project, covering concept and spatial design, hardware, software, content, installation, and ongoing support.
With 38 seats, the room has no fixed layout. Mobile chairs, work islands, a bench, and a lounge area let a lecture turn into group work, or a training session into a workshop, without leaving the room.
The technology follows the same flexibility. An OQTOPUS OR interactive table and two digital boards work alongside four acrylic boards and two flip charts, so analogue and digital tools share the same session: ideas start as a hand sketch and move to a shared screen, where the group develops, discusses, and presents them.
From collaborative problem-solving to project reviews, training, and workshops, the EPIC Room gives UBI’s academic community a place to try out new ways of teaching and learning.
